This image highlights a major environmental initiative launched by Arjun Modhwadia in his capacity as the Gujarat Cabinet Minister for Forest and Environment. The project aims to rejuvenate the state’s water bodies through a nature-first approach.
The “River Bank Green Belt” Project
The initiative is a strategic effort to transform barren or encroached land along Gujarat’s river systems into thriving ecological zones.
- Massive Scale: The Forest Department has been tasked with creating green belts along all 185 rivers across Gujarat.
- GIS Mapping Technology: For the first time, the government is using Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping to precisely identify government-owned land on riverbanks. This ensures that the reforestation is systematic and data-driven.
- A “Forest Wall”: The goal is to create a permanent “forest buffer” that serves multiple purposes:
- Soil Erosion Prevention: Dense root systems will stabilize riverbanks, preventing the loss of fertile soil during monsoon floods.
- Groundwater Recharge: The green cover helps rainwater seep into the ground, replenishing the water table for local farmers.
- Pollution Filter: The trees act as a natural filter, catching runoff and industrial pollutants before they enter the river water.
