We are looking for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Cultural Heritage & Nature Interpreter to guide visitors through Porbandar, the serene “White City” on the Arabian Sea coast, globally renowned as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi and a pivotal maritime center of the Saurashtra region. The ideal candidate should be a master storyteller capable of weaving together the city’s ancient Vedic traditions, its colonial seafaring history, and its modern-day ecological wonders.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Immersive Tours: Conduct heritage walks through the narrow lanes of the Old City, visits to the Kirti Mandir (Gandhi’s birthplace), and nature-based tours at the Porbandar Bird Sanctuary.
- Provide Expert Commentary: Deliver insightful narratives on Porbandar’s historical significance as a princely state, its architectural marvels like the Huzur Palace, and its ancient trade links with Africa and the Gulf.
- Highlight Spiritual Heritage: Explain the deep-rooted significance of the Sudama Mandir (the only temple dedicated to Lord Krishna’s friend), the Bharat Mandir, and the local maritime shrines.
- Coastal & Nature Interpretation: Guide visitors along the Chowpati beach and provide information on the local marine life and the migratory patterns of Greater Flamingos that grace the city’s wetlands.
- Coordinate Logistics: Ensure visitor safety and comfort, particularly during high-traffic festivals like Janmashtami or when navigating the city’s bustling ports.
- Hospitality: Represent the “Atithi Devo Bhava” spirit and the unique Saurashtrian hospitality that makes every traveler feel at home.
Qualifications & Skills
- Subject Expertise: Strong knowledge of Gandhian philosophy, the history of the Jethwa dynasty, and the unique maritime and avian biodiversity of the Gujarat coast.
- Communication: Exceptional storytelling skills; the ability to make history feel alive and relevant for both domestic pilgrims and international researchers.
- Languages: Fluency in Gujarati, Hindi, and English is mandatory. Proficiency in additional Indian or foreign languages is a major advantage.
- Personality: Patient, culturally sensitive, and deeply passionate about the heritage of Western India.
Experience
- 2–5 years preferred in tour guiding, cultural tourism, or environmental education.
- Local residents with academic backgrounds in History, Gandhian Studies, or Tourism who have a deep personal connection to Porbandar’s legacy are highly encouraged to apply.
- Certification from the Gujarat Tourism Board or the Ministry of Tourism is a significant plus.
