Traditional Raas and Garba of Porbandar

Navratri in Porbandar is widely respected for maintaining the purity of Saurashtra’s folk dance forms, often untouched by the commercial “disco” trends of larger cities.

  • The Setting: The celebration often takes place in grand open grounds or temple courtyards, such as near the Sandipani Vidyaniketan or the Shri Hari Mandir (depicted in the background). The temples are brilliantly illuminated, creating a divine backdrop for the dancers.
  • The Maniyaro Raas: Porbandar is famous for the Maniyaro, a high-energy, traditional folk dance of the Maher community. It involves complex footwork and the use of heavy sticks, performed with military-like precision and grace.
  • Traditional Attire: As seen in the image, the dancers wear authentic Kathiyawadi costumes.
    • Women: Wear heavily embroidered Chaniya Cholis with Abhla (mirror work) and traditional silver jewelry.
    • Men: Often wear the Kediyu (flared jacket) and Chorno (tight trousers) with colorful turbans, especially during special Raas performances.
  • The Garbi: In the center of the circle, a Garbi (a decorated earthen lamp) or an idol of Maa Durga is placed. The dance is a form of circumambulatory worship, honoring the feminine energy of the Goddess.

The Sound of Saurashtra

The music is dominated by the thunderous beats of the Dhol, the melodic Shehnai, and folk singers chanting ancient Garba hymns. The atmosphere is one of pure devotion mixed with communal joy, lasting late into the night for all nine nights.
